My own births have run the gamut, from a likely-avoidable cesarean, to an
all-natural VBAC, to a truly necessary cesarean - where the knowledge I had
gained about natural birth allowed me to give my baby the very best outcome
without doubting my decision!

When I was pregnant with my first son, I desperately wanted a natural birth. I
took the hospital's "prepared" childbirth class. The class focused a lot on
hospital policies and epidurals, but we learned nothing about techniques to
use while laboring naturally. In May, 2005, my first birth involved every
unnecessary intervention in the book, and turned into an eventual cesarean.
I was devastated.

I knew I wanted to have another baby someday, and I felt that VBAC was a
safe option. I began to research what I could do differently. I joined a natural
childbirth message board, hired a
Doula, and took classes specifically aimed
at natural birth. I even switched to a hospital that was supportive of VBAC
and natural birth.

I knew in my heart that all of the unnecessary interventions had led to my
previous cesarean. I was thrilled to find childbirth classes which focused on
birth as a natural process that usually didn't need to be tampered with. I soon
became pregnant with our second son.

In January, 2007, at 10 days past my EDD, I gave birth naturally, and without
intervention in a supportive hospital. My labor and birth were everything that I
hoped for and more. It was so peaceful and instinctual. I was able to relax
and listen to my body. The birth could not have been more perfect.

Two years later, I became pregnant with my daughter. Right on my due date,
In June, 2009, I went into labor. Her birth very quickly turned into an
absolutely necessary cesarean. Although I did not have a natural birth the
third time, my knowledge was still priceless in this situation. Because of my
better understanding of birth this time around, I was certain that the cesarean
was truly necessary. I had immediate peace with the cesarean, and never felt
the disappointment or regret I had experienced with my first cesarean. I knew
that there was nothing I could have don
e differently, and it was just the hand
we were dealt.

Learning about birth has enriched my life in so many ways. It helped me to
feel hope when I was still reeling from how far off-course my first birth had
gone. It helped me to feel prepared and in-control as I eagerly planned my
VBAC. And it helped me to feel confident and informed as I made the
decision that a cesarean was truly necessary when I was so close to giving
birth to my third baby.

It is my fondest wish as a
childbirth educator and Doula to be able to pass on
to other moms the knowledge and confidence that I have gained through my
experience and training!
Hi! I'm Mandi, and I'm a mom to three kids,
and wife to an amazing man.

After having an all-around horrible birth
experience the first time, I began to learn
about natural childbirth. Better late than
never, right?

I became more educated as I prepared for
a natural VBAC with my second baby, and
it was then that my passion for birth
began. I couldn't believe how much I never
learned about normal, natural birth while I
was pregnant with my first. I had an
unstoppable desire to someday help
families achieve the birth they desired.

After the birth of my third baby, I decided
to take the plunge and became a
childbirth educator. I'm now also so excited
to be a DONA-trained and certified
birth
doula.
My Experience &
Training
I began training as a childbirth educator
in 2009, and I have been actively
teaching since February 2010. I'm
focused on promoting natural birth and
empowering families to make educated
decisions.

I began attending births as a doula in
July 2010. I am officially trained and
certified as a birth doula with the world's
foremost birth group
DONA,
International.

I have also cloth diapered and
exclusively breastfed all three of my kids,
so I can be helpful in those areas as well!

My third baby spent 10 days in the NICU,
so I understand the range of emotions
that comes when a baby needs a bit of
extra help in the beginning.
