What is a Doula? As a labor support professional (also known as a Doula) I accompany a woman in labor to help ensure a safe and satisfying birth experience for her and her partner. I assist couples in obtaining their best birth by providing mental and emotional support, physical comfort, and (if it becomes necessary) assistance in communication with the medical staff to make sure they have the information that they need to make informed decisions.
Why should I consider having a Doula? I think DONA.org explains it beautifully... "Numerous clinical studies have found that a doula’s presence at birth * tends to result in shorter labors with fewer complications * reduces negative feelings about one’s childbirth experience * reduces the need for pitocin (a labor-inducing drug), forceps or vacuum extraction and cesareans * reduces the mother’s request for pain medication and/or epidurals"
As a Doula, what services do you offer? What tasks do you NOT perform? On my Doula Services page, you will find an outline of what services I provide as a Doula, and also important information about what a Doula does NOT do.
Does a Doula make the birth partner feel less important or less involved during the birth? Not at all! Quite the opposite! A Doula does not interfere with the birth partner's role in any way. By providing additional comfort and support (and, quite frankly, another set of hands!) a Doula can help the birth partner to feel at ease.
What kind of training do you have? I am a Bradley CertifiedChildbirth educator teaching a class focused on natural childbirth. I'm also a trained and certifiedbirth doula through DONA International. I'm a trained Placenta Encapsulation Specialist through PBi, and I'm currently finishing up the certification process. You can also learn more about my experience and training on my about me page.
What are your payment terms? What types of payments do you accept? My doula fee is dependent on various factors (such as your location, and the location of your birth place, etc.). In an effort to ensure that you will have my undivided attention during your birth, I will only book two clients per calendar month, and each client’s EDD will be at least 10 days apart from all other clients’ EDDs. In order to reserve a spot, I require a 50% non-refundable deposit. The remaining 50% of my fee is due no less than 30 days before your EDD. As payment for both the deposit and balance, I accept cash, check, PayPal, and all major credit cards. For details of the many payments options I offer, check out my payments page.
The fee for my childbirth classes is $295 per couple. Each class is limited to 5 couples. There is a deposit of $50 to hold your spot, with the remaining $245 due at the first class.
